Vinework Chardonnay 2020 (Xanadu)

Cellar for up to 5 years. Serve well chilled. Xanadu winery’s unusual name was inspired aby the legendary home of Kubla Khan as described in Samuel Coleridge’s 19th century poem. When Irishman Dr John Lagan arrived at this stunning place in Australia’s Margaret River region in the 1970s he was immediately reminded of the utopian city. Over the intervening years this gorgeous setting has been transformed into a successful and beautiful winery producing exceptional wines from classic international grape varieties. Conditions here are ideal to premium winemaking thanks to the cooling breezes from the nearby coast and the sunny Mediterranean climate. The grapes for this delicious Chardonnay come from their Stevens Road and Boodjidup vineyards in the Wallcliffe sub-region of Margaret River. Once in the winery the fruit is pressed and fermented in small batches in French oak barrels using wild yeasts. The batches are then aged on the lees in the barrel for 9 months before the winemakers create the final blend. The result is a vibrant yet elegant Chardonnay which is bursting with ripe stone fruit, citrus, white blossom and a flinty minerality. On the palate there’s a creamy texture, smooth medium body and a pure, clean finish with plenty of freshness. A great wine to drink with roast chicken, grilled fish and salads, or to keep in the cellar for a few more years.
